Funny Puppet Gif Backyard Little Girl
In seasons 2-3, live action puppet segments were added to fill up timeslots after PBS bought the U.S. rights to the show in 2001 and later retooled it. There are four characters in the segments: Gilbert, (Caillou's pet cat), Rexy (Caillou's plush dinosaur), Teddy, (Caillou's teddy bear), and a squirrel named Dee-Dee. In the intro, after Caillou puts Rexy, Teddy, and Gilbert on his bed, his kite transforms them from animated drawings into live action puppets. This is the only part of the intro to feature original animation instead of a clip from the show. Rexy, Gilbert, Teddy, and Dee-Dee are voiced by Peir Kohl, Bob Stutt, Matt Ficner, Frank Meschkuleit and Tim Gosley.
The segments take place in the backyard or in Caillou's bedroom. Gilbert, Rexy and Teddy appear in all the puppet segments, while Dee-Dee only appears in some. The puppet segments were related to topics of the episode. For example, if the Caillou segments focused on traveling, the puppet segments did too.
In the second season, the puppet segments were used as a wraparound story, transitioning from one Caillou story to the next. Sometimes, they would also transit from a Caillettes music video or a real kids segment.
In the third season, the segments were retooled into one three-minute short and for some reasons, would feature the characters singing a song. This was mainly due to the puppet segments took up too much screen time in the previous season. A closing segment featured at the end of the show would feature the puppets playing a game with the viewers. Dee-Dee is absent.
When the show was renewed for a fourth season, the puppet segments were omitted and replaced with segments featuring Caillou singing a song or inviting the viewers to play a game. Despite this, the segments have added a cult following among younger viewers, even by people who hate the show.
The segments were completely cut out of most international airings of the show and in subsequent reruns of the seasons featuring them on various PBS stations after 2005. Before the show was taken to the US, the episodes began with a grandmother (who is also the show's narrator) introducing the story to her grandchildren, then reading the story from a book. On subsequent PBS airings, a fifth episode is added.
List of Puppet Segments
None of the puppet segments have been given official names, but this a list of the segments with the name of the episode they are featured in.
Season Two (2000-2002)
In this season, the puppet segments were used as a framing story between Caillou episodes, Caillettes music videos and real life kids segments.

Traveling! |
| Rexy tells Gilbert that he would love to travel around the world in a car. Gilbert explains that distance and terrain determine the mode of travel. Teddy walks across the yard with wings attached to his back. He climbs up the playhouse steps and his friends are concerned that he might think he can fly. Teddy smiles at their silliness spread his arms. As he runs across the yard he tells them he's just pretending. It's so much fun the others choose their mode of travel and pretend too. |

Teddy discovers that not only is Rexy a big ham, but dinosaurs and dogs seem to like a lot of the same things...at least, Rexy does. When Rexy returns to his bauble to do a spell, Diedi comes up behind him and can't believe he has found it so soon. He really is magic....it's the bauble. |
Just for Laughs |
| It starts out as a day of fun. Gilbert decides to walk backward and speak in another language. Teddy tries hard to remember a joke. Remembering it was funny, he begins to laugh. He still can't recall the punch line. His laughter is contagious to Gilbert, but Rexy, try though he may, just doesn't get the joke. When the ridiculousness of the situation is explained to Rexy he finally gets the last laugh and loves it. |
Caillou Helps Out |
| Teddy is busy raking leaves, and Dee Dee is in a near panic collecting nuts. Rexy wants to play pirates and is disappointed when they both say they are too busy to play. When Gilbert comes out Rexy tells him that no one will play pirates with him. Gilbert points out that they are all busy doing something. If Rexy would help out Dee Dee while he helps out Teddy, they'd all be finished sooner and ready for a game of pirates. Rexy goes nuts! |
Imagine! |
| A sunbeam inspires the imagination in each friend. Teddy imagines he's singing in front of a huge audience, Gilbert imagines he is dancing in front of a huge audience, and Rexy imagine he is conducting a symphony orchestra. It is until they all play out their imaginings that they realize they will be even more perfect if put together. |
Big Brother Caillou |
| When Dee-Dee asks for an opinion on her painting, Rexy is at a loss for words. Being a sort-of big brother, he doesn't want to hurt her feelings, but in fact the painting's just a big green blob. He makes excuses and rushes in for higher counsel from Teddy. Teddy tells Rexy to be honest. When Rexy is honest, he discovers that the painting is just a big green blob and both he and Dee-Dee like it just that way. |
Words! |
| Teddy and Rexy each learn a new word from the dictionary. They decide to practice it all day. Teddy uses "plethora" at every possible occasion, but Rexy just can't find an occasion for his. When Gilbert reads a special Ode he's written, and it's all about Rexy, Rexy is so happy and is finally able to use his word. It's "Pulchritudinous!" |
I Can Do It! |
| Rexy decides to build a snowman. When Gilbert and Teddy try to help, explaining he's doing it all wrong, Rexy thanks them but insists he do it himself. But is doesn't take long for Rexy to realize that perhaps his friends know more about snow than he and anyway the end of his nose is freezing! Everyone joins in and the snowman is completed. Rexy realizes that some things are just better done with friends. |
My Family |
| When Rexy discovers that he has no family, no papers, he is heartbroken. Diedi is thrilled because they are having a huge family reunion, but the joy is quickly lost when she finds Rexy. Teddy and Gilbert decide to draw up some official papers for Rexy and adopt him into Caillou's family. When they present the papers, Rexy is thrilled that he has a family to belong to. Diedi is thrilled too because as they hug, Rexy is having a family reunion of his own. |
Winter! |
| The first snow of the year is a huge surprise to Rexy who believes the backyard is disappearing. When he rushes into tell Gilbert and Teddy, he can find them nowhere and believes they may be disappearing too! Gilbert, on the other hand, is so inspired he writes an Ode to the day, Teddy feels a lot like snoozing. In the end, Gilbert takes Rexy out for his first real snow experience. |
After Dark! | On a mystical magical night, Rexy decides to hunt the spookindoodle, something he has made up. But the dark night and the disappearance of Gilbert and Teddy and mostly Rexy's own imagination scare him into believing there really is a spookindoodle. It isn't until Rexy finds Gilbert and Teddy hunting for fairies that he realizes the spookindoodle still only exists in his mind. When he asks if fairies really exist they answer that nobody knows for sure...
Nature |
| Outside, Gilbert plays a detective game with the flowers, Rexy hunts for the wild animals he heard about in Caillou's bedtime story, and Teddy tries to help Mom by picking some ripened beans. Teddy gets a bit tired and snoozes under a bush, looking exactly like a wild animal. When Rexy pounces on him everybody is surprised. Gilbert identifies a black-eyed-Susan and explains to Rexy why he is glad the yard is safe from really wild animals. |
Knowing I'm Growing |
| Rexy, always keen to grow, is discouraged because he hasn't grown an inch on the measuring tape. Teddy says growing happens inside as well. He explains to Rexy that each time Rexy knows something, he has to realize he's growing, because once he didn't know it. Rexy sets off to see how much he knows and is pretty pleased until he comes across Diedi who poses a question Rexy doesn't know the answer to. Rexy hurries into Teddy to find out if he's shrinking, Teddy tells him he's growing because he knows to ask the question and now...he knows the answer. |
All Kinds of Weather | Teddy, who is a bit annoyed with the weather, tells Rexy, in a flippant manner, that the sky is leaking. Rexy hurries to Gilbert to see what they should do. Gilbert explains about the weather. Rexy has never seen or heard of snow and wonders why on earth the sky goes to all that trouble. Gilbert explains it's to make the things below it grow. Rexy wonders if it helps Dinosaurs and Gilbert answers that maybe it does.
Caillou Discovers |
| Gilbert decides to move a rock closer to a flower to make them both look prettier. This becomes a major under taking as the rock will not move. Rexy offers light thought and moral support as he bops his balloon up and down. Gilbert almost loses it with the rock until Teddy suggests a level type of set up and the rock, with ease, moves over. Gilbert is delighted to have finally got the better of the rock and feels good until Teddy asks why he didn't just move the flower over. |
Friends |
| Rexy really wants to be Gilbert's friend and so throughout the day he follows him around doing everything Gilbert is doing...climbing the tree is tricky and Rexy realizes being just like Gilbert is not all that easy. Gilbert is a tad suspicious that he is being copied and when he catches Rexy in the act of imitating him Ode writing, Rexy comes clean. But, in fact, Rexy has written a very nice Ode and with a little bit of help from Gilbert, it's perfect. |
Springtime! |
| When Rexy discovers some tiny "snowpeople" in the yard, he can hardly believe his luck. He works hard at building a relationship with them, but they are clearly very shy. Teddy has a new burst of energy and Gilbert has a yearning for a sunbeam snooze on the porch. Outside Teddy discovers the crocuses and Rexy learns that they are not tiny people, but the first flowers of spring. |
All in a Day |
| It's a very hot day and everyone is suffering until Rexy decides to make up a game where he is freezing. He cools down as he imagines the snow around him. Dee-Dee has a similar game and invites everybody to play. As they all swim around in the cold water, everyone begins to cool off. All of a sudden Dee Dee and Rexy get bored and go inside. Gilbert and Teddy heat up as the imaginary world dissolves. |
Celebrations |
| Teddy prepares a huge celebration. Rexy sits in the playhouse wishing Caillou and Rosie were around to play with him. Gilbert is stuck on a word for his Ode. In the bedroom, finally ready, Teddy waits for the others to arrive. Gilbert can't find a rhyme for "great elation" and gives up. Rexy feels sorry for himself and heads into the house too. Teddy surprises them both with his celebration and it really is. Gilbert finds his rhyme, and Rexy finds some friends to play with. |
Games to Play |
| When the friends teach Rexy hide and seek, Rexy discovers that hiding isn't all that easy. Especially when you are prone to giggles and hug attacks. A great deal of laughter ensues and Gilbert suggests that Rexy may have just created a whole new game called hide and hug! |
Grown-Ups and Me |
| Dee-Dee and Rexy play house in the yard, while Teddy and Gilbert play at playing chess. Rexy and Dee-Dee try dancing and cooking and tidying while Gilbert tries waiting and Teddy tries thinking. Gilbert finally comes outside. Dee-Dee and Rexy say they're finding it a bit boring doing the adult things. Gilbert points out that they don't know the half of it. Upstairs, Teddy almost makes a move and stops. He looks up and notices that Gilbert is not longer there. It's a bit more fun being young! |
Try, Try Again |
| When Rexy, in a hug attack, knocks down Teddy's easel, spilling the paint and ruining his picture, he is very sad. Gilbert tells him he can be better at hugging if he just tries. Rexy does try, but it's hard to control the urge to run and jump into the hug. Rexy tries again. Gilbert feels he's ready to try it out and Rexy calls to Teddy. Teddy moves away from the easel where he has started a new painting. But there is no reason to do so, because Rexy finally manages a lovely hug! |
Adventure! |
| Rexy and Dee-Dee go adventuring under a box in the yard. Teddy finishes an adventure story. Gilbert has been chasing a bulldog all night and he can go no further and falls asleep on the fence. Teddy sees the box and the two friends having an adventure and enjoys watching them bump around the yard giggling. When they bump into the fence just below Gilbert, Gilbert pounces on them, thinking they are the bull dog. Rexy and Dee Dee shriek and Teddy laughs at the fun. Rexy and Dee Dee peek out from under the box and laugh. It's the best adventure they've ever been on. |
Getting Along |
| Rexy interrupts a chess game that Gilbert and Teddy are playing at. Rexy sneezes and knocks the game off the table. Gilbert is very upset, but Rexy can't see why. After all, everybody sneezes. Teddy becomes the go between and tries to make each one see reason. Finally he gives up and is sad because he can't get them to work it out. When Gilbert and Rexy see how their behavior is affecting Teddy they make up right away, lifting Teddy spirits immensely. |
Caillou's Neighborhood |
| After listening to some of Gilbert's neighborhood stories, Rexy goes off to gather some for himself. He's on the hunt for adventure and discovers adventure waiting for him at the garden gate. He can't get over, under or around it. Exhausted from trying he falls asleep nose to grass blade. Teddy and Gilbert are shocked when they realize he's gone and delighted to find out that he didn't get very far. After all, it's not safe to go out in the neighborhood alone when you're only little. |
Old and New |
| Teddy is exercising, trying to keep spry, when he pops a couple of stitches. Gilbert helps stitch him up again, but Teddy is consumed by the fact that, in truth, he's getting old. He worries that Caillou might want a new teddy bear and that he just doesn't look exciting. Gilbert and Rexy help Teddy feel new again by giving him a brush and a new ribbon. And that's all it takes! |
Vacations |
| Teddy gets left behind by Caillou when the family goes on a vacation. He is heart broken and not much will cheer him up. But his friends don't give up easily. In early spring, they set out lawn chairs and towels and sit out in the sun beckoning to Teddy to get into the holiday. Teddy decides that he wouldn't want Caillou to be sad about him not being there when he is gone away, and so he decides to join in the fun. |
Getting the Message |
| Gilbert is working on another of his odes, whereas Teddy seems to be upset about something and doesn't want to talk about it. Gilbert and Rexy consult the "appropriate reference text" and learn that the only language Teddy bears truly understand is a hug. |
Fall is in the Air |
| Gilbert, Teddy and Rexy enjoy autumn/fall and it's festivities, and prepares for winter. |
Season Three (2001-2003)
In this season, the puppet segments were retooled to a three-minute short that would appear after the first Caillou segment. At the end of each episode, the puppets played a game segment with the viewers. The puppet segments were changed because apparently the original segments took up too much screen time. Dee-Dee mysteriously vanishes from the series.
Title | Images | Summary |
Knowing How! |
| Rexy is looking for musicians and instruments and he manages to get Teddy and Gilbert to join his band, although at first Gilbert won't join right away, as he's busying practicing his tai-chi. He comes up with a name for them, "Rexy's Rock Band" and chooses the trumpet for himself to play. When Rexy tries to play the trumpet at first, it sounds awful and he believes the instrument to be broken. The puppets tell him that he just needs to learn how to play and practice. Rexy tries again and is still awful, so he wants to give up. Gilbert says that he had trouble with tai-chi at first, but the important thing is to not give up and keep practicing. Rexy finally gets a good note and he puts it together with Gilbert and Teddy to make a nice song. He figures that they'll soon be touring the neighborhood. At the end of the episode, Gilbert appears and plays an instrument sounding game with the viewers. |
Changing Plans! |
| Rexy, Gilbert, and Teddy are having a picnic outside and are about to eat, but some bugs are invading their picnic. They decide to change the plan and eat inside, but Rexy wants to eat outside. Teddy comes up with a game that helps them be ready to start something new. They go inside and enjoy their indoor picnic together. At the end of the episode, Teddy invites the viewers to figure out which item doesn't belong. |
Sounds and Music! |
| Rexy, Gilbert and Teddy are playing a game of cards, but some sounds keep knocking down the cards during Rexy's turn. While Rexy gathers up the cards, Teddy makes up a song based on the sounds they hear. When the song's over, Rexy wins the card game by finding a match on his back. At the end of the episode, Rexy invites the viewers to help him figure out some animal sounds. |
I'm Learning! |
| Gilbert and Teddy are saying "Hello" in Spanish and French. Rexy shows up and wants to teach them how to jump up and down, but they already know. Rexy then decides to teach them his new counting song. They sing the song and have a lot of fun rhyming with the numbers. At the end of the episode, Teddy invites the viewers to help him figure out where each thing goes. |
People I Love |
| Rexy wants to give his friends a hug, but Teddy is busy painting a picture of Gilbert, who in turn, is taking a little nap. Rexy goes up to the slide to figure out who he can hug in the meantime. When Gilbert wakes up and Teddy finishes his painting, Rexy jumps in and hugs the duo. |
The World Around Me! |
| Rexy is pretending to be an explorer, when it begins to rain, much to his disappointment. Gilbert and Teddy assure him that they can have fun inside and that rain helps keep the plants alive. They then sing a song about the rain and all the fun they can have inside while the storm passes. The rain then stops and Rexy goes back to exploding. At the end of the episode, Rexy invites the viewers to help him figure out where each vehicle goes. |
Machines! Brrrrrmmm! | Rexy is playing with boxes and making them into a train. Gilbert and Teddy arrive to tell Rexy to come inside for some lunch, but Rexy wants to keep playing with his box train. Teddy then decides to make up a silly song about the train and they all have fun.
It's Cold Outside! Brrr! |
| Rexy sees that it is snowing outside and wants to use his new sled to go down a hill. When he sees that his sled isn't working, he wonders why and Gilbert explains to Rexy that his sled isn't working because it didn't snow enough for sledding. Luckily, Rexy uses the sled to slide down toy cars. |
New Places and New Things! |
| Rexy says he wants to go on a worldwide adventure. He says to Gilbert that he told him he was growing up, so he thinks he's ready for his adventure. Gilbert, however, tells him that he's not grown up enough yet. Rexy waits like a few seconds and then asks if he's grown up enough. Gilbert tells him it takes years to grow up. Rexy then sings a downbeat song about how he was going to have a great adventure, but now he has to stay right where he is. As he finishes the song, Gilbert and Teddy show up, saying they're going on a worldwide adventure. They tell him that just because they can't really go on a worldwide adventure doesn't mean they can't pretend. They sing an upbeat version of Rexy's song and then all agree that they enjoyed their pretend adventure. At the end of the episode, Teddy appears and plays the memory game about new things with the viewers. |
Step by Step! |
| Rexy, Teddy and Gilbert are assembling a bird feeder, step by step. Gilbert has the instructions and he says that the first step is to take the birdfeeder out of the box. They've already done that, so they move to the next step, which is to assemble the birdfeeder. Hearing that, Rexy wonders if that step comes with instructions. Teddy looks at it and figures it out, though, so it is quickly assembled. Gilbert reads Step 3, find a perfect spot and hang the birdfeeder. So the puppets begin looking for a spot, singing a song as they do, about how "working together is so much fun" and "you help me and I'll help you." They find a perfect spot, but notice that the birds aren't coming. They wonder what's wrong at first and Rexy asks if perhaps there's a Step 4. Gilbert looks at the instructions and sees that Rexy is absolutely right. The fourth and most important step is to put food in the birdfeeder. Gilbert wonders how Rexy knew and Rexy explains that he figured it would be odd to have a restaurant without food. They put the food in and the birds finally come. At the end of the episode, Rexy has the viewers help him get Caillou dressed. |
I Love to Pretend! | Rexy is dressed in a cape and mask, trying to pretend to be a superhero. He's looking for something superheroic to do. He hears windchimes and pretends that they're sound of an approaching dragon. He pretends to track the dragon saying that the dragon isn't fooling him and he's not afraid of it. Gilbert and Teddy come out and see him pretending. Gilbert wonder what he's doing and Teddy explains it to him. Gilbert thinks it sounds like fun and wants to join in. Gilbert roars, pretending to be something evil. Rexy gets scared, thinking that it's real at first, but Teddy tells him that it's just Gilbert pretending. He tells Rexy he knows how he can fight the dragon. He has Rexy turn on the garden hose and spray him with it. Gilbert says that it isn't fair, he was just pretending. Rexy tells him that nobody messes with Super Rexy and gets away dry. At the end of the episode, Rexy appears and plays the guessing game about animals with the viewers.
All Wet! |
| Gilbert and Teddy are fanning each other because it's very hot. Rexy comes outside, saying that Caillou's Daddy just gave the "green light" to fill up the pool. Gilbert says that he would help out, but he can't move, the heat is simply unbearable. Rexy begins filling the pool - with toys. He thinks he has it all ready, but then Teddy tells him that he's forgetting something. Rexy says that Teddy is right, he's forgotten the most important thing. He goes inside and comes back out wearing a mask and snorkel. So Gilbert tells him that the missing ingredient is water. Rexy heads back inside, leading Gilbert and Teddy to wonder what he's doing. He comes back out with a small bucket of water that isn't nearly enough to fill the pool. Gilbert suggests that he use a hose. Teddy helps Rexy with this, but at first can't get it to work. Gilbert tells him that he needs to turn it on. So he does, but ends up spraying Gilbert with water. Gilbert says that this time, though, he actually find the water refreshing. They all head for the pool together. At the end of the episode, Gilbert appears and plays the "Which One Doesn't Belong?" game with the viewers. |
Animals and Me! |
| The puppets are all outside, imagining things in the clouds. Gilbert spots a bird in a tree and they all hear it singing. They don't really understand it, but they figure if maybe they sing a song, it'll help, since birds communicate by singing. They sing a big number called "The Animal Song" with lots of different animal sounds. Once they're done, Rexy asks if the bird liked it and it chirps back as if it did. At the end of the episode, Gilbert appears and plays the memory game about animals with the viewers. |
Outdoor Adventures | The puppets have painted their birdhouse and now are looking for the perfect spot to hang it back up. Gilbert thinks maybe they should hang it on a low branch, so that they can see the birds up close, but Teddy feels it's best to hang it higher up and that way more birds will come. Teddy wins and gets to hang the birdhouse. Once it's hung up, Rexy decides to stay put and watch and see if any birds come. When none show up at first, he begins getting bored. He goes inside and comes back out dressed like carnival hawker and starts calling out for all the birds to come. Teddy comes and tells him that he has to be quiet and wait patiently if he wants the birds to come. Rexy says that he wishes the birds would hurry. Just then, Gilbert goes chasing after a butterfly. Teddy goes to stop him and while he's doing that and Rexy waits, a butterfly lands on his back and a caterpillar starts crawling up it. This is neat, but it's even more neat when a bird finally comes to the birdhouse. Everyone is happy about it. At the end of the episode, Gilbert appears and plays a "Who Lives Here?" game with the viewers.
All Around the Block! |
| The puppets are reading a story. As they're reading, Rexy notices that there's a balloon near him. He figures it must have traveled all throughout the neighborhood before finally reaching him. He makes up a song all about its journeys. Teddy decides to go and get something to tie the balloon down. As he does this, the balloon pulls Rexy upward and it's not long before he's floating in the air. He calls for Gilbert's help, but Gilbert can't really do anything. Teddy comes back out and tosses Rexy the string he went to get. Rexy finally makes it back to down to the ground and says he has an idea. So Gilbert and Teddy finish the story, while Rexy floats atop the now tied-down balloon and looks all throughout the neighborhood. At the end of the episode, Teddy invites the viewers to figure out what you can't find around the block. |
Doing it Together! | Images coming soon | Rexy is trying to plant a flower. Gilbert and Teddy ask if they can help him, but he says that he wants to do it on his own. He's trying to roll the flower pot into position and finally manages to get it up. He wonders what he should do next. Gilbert and Teddy try to help again, but he says that he wants to figure it out on his own. He thinks for a minute and admits that he wants their help. Gilbert says that he needs to put dirt in the pot next and suggests that he use a shovel. Rexy does, but is only able to get a little dirt into the pot with his small shovel. He asks Gilbert and Teddy to come and help him out. They do and it's not long before the flower is planted and watered. Rexy says that they can all talk to the flower too, but Gilbert and Teddy aren't so sure about that. At the end of the episode, Rexy appears and plays a memory game with shapes along with the viewers. |
